ERIC’s Legal Committee will host a FocusOn Conference Call to discuss the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions relating to same-sex marriages on benefit plans. The Supreme Court is expected to issue these decisions at the end of June. If the Supreme Court issues its decisions significantly earlier, we will reschedule this call for an earlier date.

The court heard oral arguments in March 2013 on two cases relating to same-sex marriages. In Hollingsworth v. Perry, the court is considering whether the U.S. Constitution prohibits California from defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. In U.S. v. Windsor, the court is examining whether the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is constitutional. Both of these cases are expected to have profound impacts on how plans are designed and administered.

The call will be held on Friday, June 28, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM (ET).

Participating on the call will be:

• Tom Meagher, Aon Hewitt. Mr. Meagher is a senior vice president responsible for legal consulting and compliance for Aon Hewitt’s Retirement Practice.

• Leslye Laderman, Buck Consultants. Ms. Laderman is a Principal, Knowledge Resource Center at Buck Consultants.

Mr. Shelley will discuss the general implications of the decisions on plans and plan sponsors. Mr. Meagher will address the impact of the decisions on retirement plans and Ms. Laderman will analyze the impact on health and welfare plans.
