It has been a busy few weeks since our last Washington Update conference call! As you know, the U.S. Supreme Court finally issued its ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, temporarily settling the legal status of the law. Focus now turns to implementing the provisions that take effect in 2013 and 2014, what affect the ruling will have on employer plans, whether there will be additional legal challenges, and how the November election results could affect the future of the ACA.
In addition, President Obama signed in to law legislation to stabilize pension-funding rates and increase PBGC premiums as part of a larger highway, student loan, and flood insurance legislative package. ERIC supported the stabilization provision, but adamantly opposed the PBGC premium increase. Meanwhile, speculation continues over the fate of the expiring tax cuts and the mandated spending cuts scheduled to take effect under the process created by last year's debt reduction agreement.
