09/17/14 - Telehealth: the Legal and Regulatory Obstacles

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 (2pm - 3:30pm US/Eastern)

Call Time: 2:00 p.m. -- 3:30 p.m. (EDT)

This is a member-only call.

ERIC is venturing slightly off the beaten track to offer a FocusOn call on Telehealth, an issue that has assumed increasing importance over the years for ERIC members. It is estimated that the number of patients using telehealth services will increase from 250,000 patients today to over 3 million by 2018. Similarly, revenue derived from telehealth is expected grow from $230 million in 2013 to $1.9 billion in 2018. As is all too often the case, however, serious legal and regulatory issues remain and will be a barrier to the wider adoption of telehealth. This FocusOn call will explore these legal and regulatory issues – including those involving licensure, scope of practice, online prescribing, privacy and security - and also review the many policy initiatives underway to address them.

Our speaker for the call will be René Y. Quashie, Senior Counsel in the Health Care and Life Sciences practice, in the Washington, DC, office of Epstein, Becker & Green. René has significant health care regulatory and government relations experience and focuses his practice on a number of issues, including telehealth regulatory issues, HIT implementation, Medicare reimbursement, coding and coverage, HIPAA privacy and security, health care reform implementation, and compliance for medical device manufacturers.
