ERIC Breaking News: Reid Selects Conferees on Bill Including Deferred and Executive Compensation Provisions

Majority Leader Harry Reid named Conferees to the emergency supplemental spending bill (H.R. 1591) late yesterday. The conferees do NOT include Senator Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. ERIC staff has learned that Senate Minority Leader McConnell will likely name Senator Grassley, Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, as a Conferee. There is no word yet on when the House will name Conferees. Both the House and Senate are departing for Easter recess, so a conference will not officially begin until they return from the recess. The House is scheduled to return April 14; the Senate on April 12.

The bill, which the Senate approved yesterday, includes an amendment offered by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) and ranking member Charles Grassley (R-IA) that essentially incorporates the text of the Senate-passed version of H.R. 2, the "Small Business and Work Opportunity Act of 2007." The amendment includes the three deferred and executive compensation issues that ERIC has aggressively opposed. We will provide you with more information as it becomes available.

For more information on the bill, please contact Rosemary Becchi or Mike Chittenden.
