CMS Administrator Mark McClellan Resigning

The top official at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Administrator Mark McClellan, has announced that he will be leaving his current position after a brief transition period, probably by early October. McClellan oversaw CMS through periods of vast change, improvement and modernization and was an ally of the employer community. Speculation as to who will replace Administrator McClellan is already underway, with a wide range of candidates including Deputy Administrator Leslie Norwalk and other top CMS officials. Additional candidates are rumored to include Herb Kuhn, head of CMS' Center for Medicare Management, Abbey Block, Director of the Center for Beneficiary Choices, and Dennis Smith, Director of the federal Medicaid program.
