House Approves New Pension Bill: HR 4

Late Friday evening the House of Representatives approved a new pension reform bill (H.R.4) that tracks the conference agreement reached at the end of last week on the pension issues in H.R.2830. H.R.4 is now in the Senate which may act on the bill before it adjourns for the August recess at the end of this week. If the Senate approves H.R.4 without amendment, the bill will go directly to the President. If the Senate amends the bill, the two bills would first have to be reconciled, most likely when Congress returns in September.

The House vote was 279-131. Sixteen Republicans voted against the bill -- including 15 Republican members of the Texas delegation who were objecting to the final bill's failure to include relief for non-bankrupt airlines important to their state. 76 Democrats voted for the bill on final passage.
