ERIC Commends Choice of Boehner for Majority Leader

The ERISA Industry Committee (ERIC) today congratulated Representative John Boehner (R-OH) on his election as House Majority Leader. Mark Ugoretz, President said that “Rep. Boehner’s election is the elevation of a principled leader who has worked hard to encourage employers to sponsor retirement and health plans and to protect the retirement security and health benefits of America’s employees.”

“Boehner’s approach to issues is always balanced and has reflected a deep understanding of both employer and employee needs. We are confident that he will bring that approach to his Leadership position and national issues,” Ugoretz said.

Rep. Boehner’s leadership as chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce since 2001 came at a time of challenge for American employers as they worked to provide valuable retirement benefits in the face of increasing threats from overseas competition, declining asset valuations, low interest rates, and increasingly complex legislation and regulations. Ugoretz called Rep. Boehner’s leadership “instrumental in ensuring that proposed changes to the pension funding system do not undermine the very system that they are supposed to protect.”

ERIC looks forward to continuing to work with Rep. Boehner as the House continues to consider important employee benefits legislation.
