PBGC 2007 Data Book Shows New Trends, Growing Hybrid Plans
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation recently released the Pension Insurance Data Book 2007, showing statistical trends in private sector defined benefit plans.
Among the more noteworthy items PBGC reported is that as of 2006 (the most recent year for which data is available), 7.4 percent of the defined benefit plans it insures were hybrid. For plans with 5,000 or more participants, 31.3 percent of PBGC-insured plans were hybrid as of 2006. The share of PBGC-insured hybrid plans continues to increase, with the percentage of all PBGC-insured plans increasing from 3.7 percent in 2001 to 7.4 percent in 2006, and the percentage of the largest PBGC-insured hybrid plans increasing from 22 percent in 2001 to 31.3 percent in 2006.
