The ERISA Industry Committee Supports Repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s Excise Tax

For Immediate Release

Washington, DC – The ERISA Industry Committee (ERIC) submitted a letter in support of the “Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2017,” legislation that would eliminate the devastating 40 percent excise tax on health benefits imposed by the Affordable Care Act.

ERIC, the only national association that advocates exclusively for large employers on health, retirement, and compensation public policies at the federal, state, and local levels, is committed to repealing the tax and removing the devastating financial and administrative burden it would place on employers and their employees.

“ERIC fully supports the ‘Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2017’ and hopes that Congress will move quickly to pass it and remove this heavy burden hanging over the heads of employers,” said James Gelfand, Senior Vice President, Health Policy, ERIC. “Employers work hard to design benefits that keeps costs under control. Taxing those benefits would only lead to fewer employers offering health benefits and worse options for employees. Changes to the health care system should seek to build on the success of the employer-sponsored system, not punish the part of the system that truly works.”
